I've been wanting to get into cosplay for a few years now. Ultimately I want to make my own, but only have very basic sewing skills. I'm not sure what the next con I can go to will be: Anime Boston, Anime Expo, Comic Con? But I do hope that I can pull together a cosplay for it whether I make it or not.
I was wondering though, what people's thoughts are on home made versus store bought cosplays.

I think home made can go either way, depending on how much effort you put in it. and store bought also depends on her much you spend

Cosplay is hard when it comes to putting the right things together.
For example unless you are exceptional at sewing it can be a disaster, and on the other hand many store bought do not stay true to the original outfit instead opting for cheaper ways to do it, sometimes accessories might be off or colors might be off.
My recommendation is a mixture of both, find a cosplay that looks nice online, buy it and then edit if it needs to be. Also some cosplays are easily put together with items you can get at Target or Macy's and stuff like that

Thanks for the tips. My mom sews and always made my halloween costumes as a kid so I can always ask her for help and of course I have access to a sewing machine. I did sew my own quilt in 12 grade as a school project, but I know that clothes are a bit harder to do.
Maybe I will try to find outfits that are similar to every day life and tweak them like you suggested.

I've found all kinds of nice things for my cosplay during shopping for my Halloween costume this year for a get together.

Since I'm not planning on going to a con soon not sure who I would pick. I mean right now I want to do Cheria, but that might change in a few months. Before that I wanted to do Asuna, but not sure how I would pull that off with the chest plate and all and before that it was tiger version of super sonico. So there are a bunch I would want to cosplay as, but it keeps changing.

One of my pet peeves is having a cosplay that doesn't look professionally made. It's very hard putting a cosplay together a few days or even weeks(depending on the cosplay) before the con. I was CC from Code Geass at the last con I went to. Now finding a neon green wig wasn't hard. I just bought that from amazon. But making the costume my self was some what of a challenge. The hardest part I had was probably making the straps stay onto the fabric I was using.

Being my first if I was going to put something together instead of purchasing then I probably should start way ahead. For my first it doesn't have to be perfect for me, but I'm afraid of what others would say. I never dressed up at a con so I don't know if people would insult me right there, but as many of you know the internet can be brutal.

Well I for one don't enjoy people who make bad comments about other cosplays. But I know where your coming from. There is always going to be someone who you think has a better cosplay then you. But don't let that stop you from making cosplay the way you want to. While having a nice cosplay is great what actually helps if you have a similar body type to the character you want to cosplay. For example I cosplayed Taiga the first time I went to a convention. Even though my cosplay wasn't great, I pulled it off because I'm petite and on the smaller side.

I've never cosplayed before mostly because there aren't any events or anything where I live. But I think I'm going to start putting subtle anime elements into my everyday clothes... Like a jacket that resembles the outfits from Attack on Titan with some white jeans ahaha xD But if I ever do have an opportunity to cosplay for real I'd probably make it myself

I think adding elements from anime into your wardrobe is a great idea. I wouldn't even know where to begin though.
Also going with your body type would be helpful for beginners or really anyone trying to really bring the character to life. But I also don't want to limit myself.

Yeah there are many ways to cosplay. You just have to be comturble with it and know how far you can go out of your comfort zone.

Ya I think my comfort zone stops at any character who shows off their stomach lol. I also want to be careful with certain character's costumes that might show off my tattoos as I feel that it takes away from the cosplay.

I've really wanted to cosplay Inori for quite a while now but I've been hesitant because she tends to show a little more skin then I would be used to.

I love her main outfit, but not sure I would be comfortable in it.

Yeah xD I mean she has a couple other outfits but it wouldn't be the same as her original one.
